This El Remate, a village of approx. 350 families, has several good hotels - the most popular being La Casa De Don David, and numerous smaller places to stay, plus several places for camping and numerous places to eat. El Remate is a good option to the often crowded area of Since the lake does not have sandy beaches, swimming and kayaking is best done from any one of its numerous docks. A new dock with bathroom and shower facilities is located on the left as you enter the village. Also, the dock in front of Cerro Cahui park is one of the best. It is located 2 km from the village center, along the lakeshore road. The dock in front of Las Orquideas restaurant is also good. All docks are public, even if they appear private. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent. El Remate is best known for its famous woodcarving. Working in tourism and carving wood provides an income for more than 70% of locals. Be sure to visit the numerous craft shops along the main road in the village. Two very large Maya gods located at the entrance of Hotel/Restaurant La Casa De Don David are a great example of the skill of the local carvers. Birdwatching is becoming more and more popular in Remate since some of the birds found around the lake don't exist in Tikal. See bird list. Cerro Cahui is an excellent area for birding. Also, boat trips on the lake provide great opportunities for birdwatching. Birding guides can be contacted through La Casa De Don David. Getting to El Remate is easy.
